We tested: the seafood cuisine of Nobile Mare

Exactly under the Sicilian sun

We were already completely under the spell of Casa Nobile, but the queue in front of this iconic pizzeria in the 2nd arrondissement got the better of us our patience.
We then rushed to Comptoir Nobile, the Italian grocery and sandwich shop that sends out panino and gelata in the summer. And now we learn of the opening of a new Nobile address, which is also in a place that I particularly like. The old halls of Gerland.

It all starts with a meeting with a dear and old friend.
Well old… not that old, let's say “longtime”, to avoid offending anyone (and we're the same age).< br>Living in the green lands of south-west Lyon, coming to the city by car gives her some cold sweats. I obviously forbid any judgement, me the bike sore that I am, and offer him an appointment in Gerland, guaranteeing stress-free access to the exit of the ring road, free parking and an early evening aperitif at Ninkazi.

After a few outpourings of joy, a huge hug without a mask and a few glasses of wine, we head to Nobile Mare.

From the old gourmet hall to the Italian restaurant

The architecture of this emblematic place in Gerland, a former covered market dating from 1933, has been preserved and immerses us in a gourmet decor full of history.

We tested: the kitchen of the seafood from Nobile Mare

The place, previously occupied by the Jolls fish restaurant, is still impressive. In the large L-shaped hall, with a very high ceiling and very bright, we discover large windows, mezzanines, potted olive trees and the famous kitchens installed in the old market stalls of the halls.
I am thrilled when we seated us next to the antipasti buffet and the rustic ham slicer.

What a beautiful energy! The waiters run in all directions speaking Italian, delicate smells come out of the kitchens, the pans stir on the stoves and the guests all seem happy to be there. You feel the excitement of a real trattoria.

Antipasti, primi, secondi, dolci… the whole thing

Nobile Mare specializes in seafood dishes. The menu includes seafood platters, Italian pasta specialties, such as the famous linguine al vongole, linguine with squid ink, bucacini with sardines, pasta with razor clams, risotto marinara, fish couscous (à la trapanese). And also, a nice menu of grilled fish and marinated octopus.

The little extra that does it all is the extra grated bottarga that you can add to your pasta dish. Do you know bottarga? it is the pocket of dried mullet egg, with a slightly candied appearance and a powerful taste (of fish) very iodized. You have to be an amateur, I love it.

anti-pasti

This plate alone is worth the trip. The one-person version is actually plenty big enough for two. Look at this pretty mound. (€16 charcuterie version and €10 veggie version).
You can find among other things: Roman-style artichokes stuffed with mint and garlic, eggplant with parmigianna, marinated zucchini, yellow picillos in oil… And then thinly sliced raw ham and a nice slice of mortadella.
No lie, everything is delicious!

We also ordered the very fashionable burrata with truffles (who can resist a burrata with truffles?).
That’s when my girlfriend took off and decided to cancel her pasta dish.

pastas

I need more. I took the famous Linguine cacio e pepe which are to die for.

They are turned, rolled, rubbed and turned over in the large wheel of Parmesan cheese, then flambéed with grappa. And that is precisely what makes ALL the difference. Grappa, which gives this dish a truly unique taste. The dish is not cheap (25€), but just like for the starter, there is plenty for two. I finally cracked and was able to leave with my meal the next day.

Dolci

A little flashback from my friend who is rather sweet-toothed and who orders a gourmet coffee with her assortment of delicious little desserts: Canolli, tiramissu and amaretto and once again, a portion really large enough to share.

conclusione

Nobile mare promises to be a safe bet for eating in the south of Lyon. We are welcomed with a smile and just enough familiarity. The cuisine is generous, gourmet and above all delicious and the lively trattoria setting is full of charm and conviviality. That's what. We had a great time.
And since we didn't taste the fish menu in the end, that gives me a very good reason to come back.
