For the thirty -something passionate about new technologies that I am, manipulating a foldable smartphone, it is a kind of fantasy that is realized (any guarded proportion).But after the euphoria of innovation, I wanted to know what a foldable smartphone really brought on a daily basis.Here is my report.
So I swapped my iPhone for a month and adopted the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, the most successful foldable model today.Above all, the Z Fold 3 is in my opinion the format that will meet the most success since it meets the needs of tomorrow more.I see the foldable smartphone rather like a tablet that we fold in to make it a smartphone.But that's just my opinion.
So what does it use a foldable smartphone every day?Is this technological revolution accompanied by a revolution in our uses?What are the limits of this specific format?After a month of use, here are some answers.

I will not focus on the transition between iOS and Android since I use the two operating systems daily.On the software side, I haven't lost any landmark The Galaxy Z Fold 3 boarding One Ui, a version of Android that I know well.
On the other hand, I quickly adopted new habits with Samsung's foldable smartphone.Its specific format gives the possibility to use it either as a smartphone or by tablet.And as strange as it may seem, it is not always easy to know when to adopt the right format.
When closed, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 displays a longer than wide screen.And if Samsung has considerably optimized the size/screen ratio, the hinge still takes up a lot of space.Also, the Z Fold 3 screen is still too small to interact with him as on any other smartphone.

The main difficulty for me is to type text on this screen.The keys are too close to which multiplies the errors of strikes.However, I have relatively fine fingers.Also, the keyboard occupies a good part of the screen which further reduces the display surface.
So I quickly considered the external screen as a consultation tool.As soon as I have to interact with my applications, I therefore open the Z Fold 3. By this simple gesture, my use is then completely transformed.

So it’s open that the magic of the foldable smartphone operates.This waouh effect is accentuated when an application has already opened on the external screen.From the opening, this same interface is deployed on a slab of more than 7 inches with all the comforts that it brings.
The Galaxy Z Fold 3 then becomes a small tablet.A kind of iPad Mini, on Samsung sauce.Some will say that the little fold in the center disturbs.If this point remains an axis of improvement, it is quickly forgotten on a daily basis.As far as I'm concerned, this slight relief no longer existed (in my eyes) after just a few days.
With this foldable smartphone format, we then carry a tablet in the pocket.This is the whole point of the approach, I give you it.But the execution is such that we are almost surprised every day.
In practice, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a formidable productivity tool.The multitasking takes on a whole different dimension, the use of a stylus takes on its full meaning and taking notes is a treat.I am not a designer but I imagine that people gifted in this area would have a lot of fun with such a tool.
As far as I'm concerned, this format mainly brought me undeniable comfort for multimedia uses.Of such quality and with such a large size, the screen of the piable smartphone is simply enjoyable.Whether it is to play (what a foot!), Watch a movie or a series, watch videos on YouTube or Twitch - everything is bigger, everything is more beautiful.A daily wonder.

By the way, I will point out that Samsung has developed small tools allowing non -optimized applications to adapt to this screen.This is the case, for example, of Instagram which, on such a screen surface, gives meaning to this social network whose primary interest was to share beautiful photos.
As for optimized applications, they are devilishly effective on a daily basis.For example, I think of the Email application of Samsung which takes advantage of the screen surface to adopt a display similar to that of PC or Mac email customers (list of emails on the left in a column, emails on the right).
Finally, I would risk saying that such a device can also replace a PC for the most basic uses.Thanks to Dex, just connect the Z Fold 3 to a monitor for a PC interface to appear on the screen.By adding a wireless keyboard and mouse you can easily process your emails, do photo touch-up, small video montages or write long texts (like this) in dedicated applications like Google Docs.

In summary, the foldable smartphone has completely changed my way of using my smartphone.And this is simply due to the fact that a Galaxy Z Fold 3 is not really a smartphone.In my opinion, it is rather a tablet that is folded down to transport it in a pocket or a small handbag.In this, it is already a revolution.
Still perfectible
When you read these lines, you probably tell yourself that I have lost all objectivity.Rest assured, the foldable smartphone, like any innovation, is far from perfect.If Samsung has considerably improved its copy since the first Fold, this Z Fold 3 still presents some fairly boring faults on a daily basis.

The first is undoubtedly the smallest for some: its autonomy is still very average.Despite optimization efforts, the two batteries integrated into the machine do not supply these two magnificent screens for a very long time.
If, like me, you mainly use the large internal screen, then daily recharge is inevitable.I even regularly have to recharge my Z Fold 3 at the end of the afternoon and I found the stress of missing battery before returning home in the evening after a day on the go.Quick charging systems help but replace good autonomy.

Another drawback: the foldable smartphone remains fragile.Again, Samsung has worked well to strengthen the hinge and screens, but the very format of the product remains fragile.Do not forget on a sofa with the open screen.Inadvertently sit on it will break it in half for sure.And hop, 1800 euros thrown out the window.
I was also able to feel a certain concern when I slipped the Z Fold 3 into a backpack with which I had gone to the beach a few days before.The hinge is with water but not dust and even less with sand grains.So I heard a disturbing sound of sand grain in the mechanism after this unexpected experience.Caution is therefore constantly putting.However, you cannot always treat your smartphone as the apple of your eyes.It is a tool, as such it may be unintentionally manhandling it.

Finally, I will point out that developers also have a role to play in improving foldable smartphones.For the time being, there are few who play the game. And if Samsung had found a little tip to optimize the display of all applications, we would only have a really interesting handle for this format.I am also waiting to see if the developers will succeed in being creative to bring new uses and further improve our daily lives.The Killer Feature is still lacking in the call.

The format chosen by Samsung is in my opinion the one that makes the most changes in our use.In reality, we are more to use a tablet than a smartphone with its format.With the difference that we can store it in a pocket.
With a little software optimization, the work of developers and an improvement in photo quality, the foldable smartphone will undoubtedly be the product that we will all use tomorrow.In any case, many of us.I am convinced, but this is only my opinion.
