Did you spend your Sunday on the couch watching TV? A little day of inactivity does more for mental health than it seems!

What could be better than spending a day resting and relaxing lying on the sofa watching series or outside on a deckchair with your face in the sun? If we love spending such moments, we must admit that sometimes guilt catches up with us and we feel like we have lost a day. In times of emerging from the pandemic like now, the idea of doing nothing seems even more unimaginable to us after having spent the last two years under the hegemony of restrictions. However, it turns out that these days of inactivity are more beneficial than we think, especially for the body and the mind. "That moment, when you allow yourself to do nothing, is when the body regenerates, especially if you exercise a lot," Renee McGregor, a nutritionist, explains to the British version of "Stylist". “When you're physically active all the time, there are a lot of chemical reactions going on all the time. The body needs an opportunity to be still to wonder what is going on and what needs to be fixed. It is during this period that the body repairs bones, tissues and muscles and makes the red blood cells that support your immune system,” she adds.

If you allow yourself a day of total rest, without physical activity, do not compensate with a busy schedule because the body will still feel anxiety: "you have to know that the body does not know the difference between physical or emotional stress, it just records stress,” continues Renee McGregor. So in a period of intense agitation, we do not hesitate to press the pause button for the good of the body and the brain.

Doing nothing, a cure for increased productivity?

According to Renee McGregor, allowing yourself quiet days is also very beneficial for creativity. Yes, don't we say that the best ideas come to us in the shower, at the supermarket or even when we are watching TV? "When I'm writing a book, I give myself this kind of downtime where I'm just sitting outside staring at the sky or gazing at my dogs. This is how my best ideas come to mind,” says the nutritionist.

Finally, during these episodes of calm, we spend time with loved ones, friends, family or even our partner. Even sitting next to each other doing nothing is an important form of connection for our own well-being. So, the next time we give ourselves a day in front of Netflix, we avoid crossing paths with lady guilt and we keep in mind that these break times are a gift we give to ourselves, his body and his mind.
