Hooray! I finally crossed off the third task on my unfinished list - tiebacks for my kitchen curtains. God knows why I put it off for so long. They were so quick and easy to make. Interesting, here is my quick and easy method for making tiebacks to fit all curtain sizes… They took me about 45 minutes per pair.

Card or paper for making the modelFabric - approximately 0.5 to 0.75 yards/yards, depending on the size of your tiebacks. See how to calculate more precisely below. Buckram - approximately 1.5 to 2 yards/yards, depending the size of your tiebacks. See how to calculate more precisely below. Yarn to match or contrast as desired 4 curtain rings approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter.Create your model for your tieback
Gather one of your curtains together with a tape measure where you want your tieback to sit, so the curtain will be pulled the way you want. This measurement will give the finished width of each tieback.
Draw a horizontal line the same length as your measurement on a piece of card or paper.
Add a line at each end of the desired length for the ends of your tiebacks. If you're not sure, just guess, you can always adjust later.
Mark a line under the center of the horizontal line the length you want the deepest part of your tieback to be.
Draw a curve joining this line to the edge lines in a smooth curve to complete the shape of your tieback. If you are not happy with this shape, redraw the lines until you are.
Once you are satisfied, cut half of the template as shown below, then fold it over and use the cut half of the curve as a template to cut out the other half. This will create a perfectly symmetrical pattern.

Finally, place your template around your curtain as if it were your finished tieback to check that you will be happy with the finished product. If you are not, re-measure and redraw until you are happy with it. be.
Calculate the amount of fabric you need for your tieback
Width: at least as wide as a tieback plus 1 inch or 3 cm
Length in feet and inches = (4 x length at deepest part of tieback) + 2
Length in centimeters and meters = (4 x length at the deepest part of the tieback) + 6
Example, my tieback was 28 inches wide and 4 inches deep
Required fabric width = 28 + 1 = 29 inches.
Length of fabric required = (4 x 4) + 2 = 18 inches
Or in centimeters:
My tieback was 70cm wide and 10cm deep
Required fabric width = 70 + 3 = 73cms
Length of fabric required = (4 x 10) + 6 = 46 centimeters
You will also need two pieces of buckram the same size as your tieback pattern.
I used buckram from a 5 inch/13 cm wide roll, so for two 28 inch/70 cm tiebacks I needed a 56 inch/140 cm long piece of buckram.
Cut out your tieback
Fold the top of your fabric along the right yarn, wrong sides together, about 3/4 inch (2 cm) longer than the depth of your tieback. Place your pattern with the straight edge along the fold.
Draw a line on the fabric 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) from the edges of the template using a pencil or chalk.
Pin inside the line, making sure to pin both layers of fabric together.
Cut along the line you drew
Repeat the operation to cut out the second tieback.
Cut buckram
Place the tieback template on a single layer of buckram and draw around it. Cut out Repeat for second tiebackMake your hugs
Wrong sides together, press the fabric along the center fold.
Open and place the long straight edge of the buckram wrong side up against the crease.
Press the edges to the wrong side 1/2" (1.5cm) all the way around, overlapping the buckram if necessary. You may need to clip the curved edge a bit if you have a particularly thick fabric.
Fold the tieback together, so the buckram is sandwiched in the middle, and press to close.
If the edges don't meet exactly, press down until they do.Topstitch the edges together.
Sew the curtain rings about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the edge of the tieback – inside.
There you go! You have a pair of custom curtain tiebacks.
