Curtain making – instructions for beginners in 50 photos

Making curtains today is an interesting task that is not so difficult as we imagined. The diversity of textiles and curtain rods makes it much easier to sew curtains. But, if you don't have standard windows, finding the right curtains is almost impossible. This means that instead of desperately wandering around the shops, you can buy everything you need to sew curtains yourself. Therefore, we have prepared several curtain making ideas with instructions for beginners. Our ideas will convince you that such a business can be pleasant and quite easy.

Curtain making – looking for the right rod and the best selection of fabrics

First, once the model of the curtains has been determined, you have to go in search of the right rod. Depending on the furniture in the room where you want to hang the curtains, you can choose between a wooden or metal bar and the models for PVC windows. In order to optically expand and enlarge the space, it is recommendable to bet on monochromatic and unadorned curtain fabrics. The blackout curtains will provide you with good protection against the sun while the semi-transparent fabrics will play a rather decorative role.

The dimensions of the curtains are calculated according to those of the window, but they also depend on the preferred method of fixing. Very often the curtain rod is mounted directly to the ceiling. In such a case, it is necessary to leave at least 2-5 cm from the top and bottom to make the upper hem and the lower hem. If the purchased fabric already has hems, we only have to measure the distance from the bar to the floor.

Making curtains for beginners – attach the staple hooks to the curtain gathering tape

Depending on how it is fixed – whether on the ceiling or on the wall – you have to choose the matching staple hooks, rings and eyelets. It is recommendable to purchase all the necessary mounting accessories at once. When calculating fabric dimensions for curtains, purchase fabric twice as long as needed. This is necessary because in order to achieve a decorative effect, the fabric needs to be pleated.

Curtain making – gathering tape, pins and a tape measure

In order to make the pleats, all we have to do is pull the strings until we get the desired width. This step is very important because it determines the design of the curtain and the number of pleats. Once the folds are made, you can tie the strings at each end and cut. We can already smooth and adjust the folds in order to distribute them evenly.
