How to Measure for a Curtain Rod | decorating tips

The most common mistake people make when measuring standard drapes is the rod itself. I see this mistake so often that I decided to write an article so that at least all of my readers are aware. fluent.

And if you want to know which color to choose for your curtain rod, also read this article.

How to measure for a curtain rod

First, you should know that your curtain rod usually needs to be 10 to 15 inches longer on each side of the window to allow the fabric to hang down each side.

In the two photos below, it looks like the curtain rod isn't much longer than the window (obviously intentional in this case, as a designer decorated those pieces). But, the problem is that the fabric then covers part of the window and most of us want as much light as possible entering the room, right?!

So the correct way to measure your curtain rod is to have the "stack" of excess drapery hanging next to the window, not above it. This means that your curtain rod measurements should exceed the width from your window.

Here is an example of what that looks like.

Notice the window on the left side of the room where you can just see the edge of the window frame almost lining up with the edge of the curtain. Keeping the curtains to the edge of the window allows maximum light to enter this room and makes the windows appear larger.

In the image above, the curtain rods help bring the windows of different sizes together in this room. a similar height.

The window above is probably the same size as the ones in the previous image with blue walls, but the rod is longer on either side of the window here, leaving enough room for the drapery to just cover the casing, which makes the window appear larger. in addition to adding softness and vertical height to the room.

Here's another tip for curtain rods: make sure you buy at least two panels on each side. Even if you don't plan to close them, it should seem possible. There's nothing worse than a sign hanging like it's on a clothesline (so flat) on your clothes rail when drawn - that's when it really looks like Ikea - instead of design!

The shutters on your exterior should also look like they can close.
