How to make simple curtain clips
By Lee Carroll
There are almost as many ways to hang curtains as there are styles of curtains, and one of the quickest is to use clips. You can make curtain clips from craft rings, suspender clips, and of inexpensive hardware, and customize them to match the room. Measure the top of the curtain to determine how many clips you will need. If the curtain is lightweight, such as a sheer cafe curtain, you will have need about one clip every 1 1/2 or 2 inches; if the curtain is heavier, space them closer together. Most curtain clips are not suitable for heavy drapes.
Gather an equal number of wooden craft rings, hanger clips, and hook screws 1/2 inch or smaller on a work table. Wooden craft rings are available in many diameters, including 1, 1 1/2 and 2 inches. Choose a ring size that fits and slides easily over the curtain rod. Suspender clips are sewing items that are attached to the bottom edge of garment suspenders. are flat, somewhat standard in size, made of metal and the top opens and closes. Hook screws are similar to eye screws except there is a hook on the end instead of a ring or one eye.
Twist the screw part of a hook screw into the outside edge of a wooden ring until the threaded part of the screw is fully inserted and the hook bends in the same direction as the ring. It doesn't matter where the hook is inserted, as long as it is on the outer edge and not the side of the ring; the hooks will naturally face down after the rings are hung. Insert one hook screw per ring.
Open each suspender. Slide the clips over the top edge of the curtain, spaced evenly. Close the clips to grip the fabric.
Slide the wooden rings onto the curtain rod with all the screw hooks facing the same direction. The hooks can curve forward or backward.
Hang the curtain by sliding the metal bar on the top edge of each suspender clip over the hook portion of a hook screw.
Tips
Paint the curtain rings, hooks and clips with spray paint before assembling them, if desired. Use multi-purpose paint for the wooden rings, but use spray paint for the surfaces metal paint hanger hooks and clips. An alternative to hanger hooks are miniature wooden clothespins.Twist the hook screws in the rings and slide the rings onto the rod.Drill a small hole in the top clothespins to one side, making the hole slightly larger than the thickness of the hook screws. Attach the clothespins to the top edge of the curtain and slide the drilled holes at the top of the clothespins over the hooks .For curtains with grommets on top, similar to the top edge of a shower curtain, you can use simple, lightweight carabiners. Flip the lever on the clips to open them and slide the curtain grommets over the clips, then slide the clips onto the rod.Biography of the writer
