How to hang beautiful light garlands under a terrace
How to hang string lights for your patio
This is one of those articles that I debated writing because I didn't know if it would be silly to devote an entire article to suspension; outdoor string lights. I decided to write this because after researching existing tutorials I realized that most of them were for hanging string lights on decks or patios and not under the second floor terraces.
You'd think the requirements would be the same. Alas no. At least for us they weren't. That's because hanging the string lights under a bridge somewhat protects them from nature. felt like some of the tutorials were overkill. Hanging wire? Are you using heavy-duty carabiners? Seems overkill for what we wanted to do.
Here are my tips for hanging light garlands under a terrace.
Attach the lights to the waterproof outdoor socket of the wireless remote
This might be one of my favorite things about outdoor lights!
If you have trouble hanging outdoor string lights, you'll definitely want to add an outdoor remote control socket so you have the ability to turn on your lights from inside your home.
We hang our remotes on our deck door. It makes it super easy to turn on the lights when looking for a bit of ambiance. If something's handy, you're sure to use it more!

A. Measure the border you need to embellish with lights, such as your home's roofline, patio overhang, or around window surrounds. Purchase enough string lights to cover this separation serenely. Consider the shading design you intend to show, such as using a single shading, swapping two hues, or arbitrarily mixing hues.
B. Purchase enough clasps to cover this divider with one clasp every 6 to 8 inches, depending on the type of lights you will be using. Bulb type lights, known as C7 or C9 bulbs, use larger clasps than scale downlights or ice cube lights.

How tall should patio string lights be?
Always be careful hanging patio string lights along walking paths. Small, thin outdoor string lights are hard to see when not on.
You don't want to be responsible for someone making their own liner! It's hard to give you a definitive size, since it largely depends on the height of the tallest person on your patio! However , 9-10 feet is a good rule of thumb.
Why 9-10 feet? Its 4-5 feet taller than an average sized human being. Lights hang naturally and sag over time, so you'll need some breathing space.

Build your own mounts
Our final method for hanging outdoor lights is to build your own brackets. This is the most expensive and time-consuming option, but it can be worth it.
While there are countless ways to build stands, my favorite method uses buckets and poles to ensure easy portability. In my opinion, this is far superior to a permanent method where you bury the pole in the real ground.
My favorite method of building your own supports is to place support poles in two sturdy buckets, then add heavy filler material.
I prefer wooden posts, but hollow metal posts and even PVC pipes also work well. I like to fill each bucket with gravel to hold the post in place. However, for a slightly more permanent design, you can fill buckets with concrete, like Quikrete.
Simply cut the posts to your desired height, place each in a bucket, fill the bucket with heavy material, and hang your lights – voila, you've just completed one of my favorite deck lighting ideas!

Before hanging your decor, you need to make sure that you are using the correct type of hooks specifically designed for vinyl siding. Many of these are S-shaped so that one end tucks behind the siding boards.
These are the exact vinyl siding hooks I used to hang the metal wall decor on the walls of our screened porch and they ship free if you are an Amazon Prime member.
They come in a pack of six, and this version can hold up to five pounds. The vinyl siding hooks are plastic and worked great for hanging my lightweight metal wall decor.
When you're ready to hang things on your vinyl siding, push the curved part of the hook between the siding panels.
My vinyl siding pieces are molded to look like two planks together, which means the hooks only work between separate planks. The hooks need somewhere to grip.
This is what the Vinyl Siding Hook looks like after you install it:
And that's all there is to it!
Due to the way the plates are made, I used wire to hang them. I simply ran the wire over the vinyl siding hook and used a level to hang the plates evenly.
Well, at least until a kid walks past and tilts them off center!
