In terms of mythological contribution, Suicide Squad is a success.David Ayer's feature film pushes the limits of the Cinematographic Universe DC Comics with the introduction of new characters, emblematic places and concepts that only ask to be revisited.More than ever, the richness of the DC Comics universe is there, before our eyes, without the crutches that are Batman and Superman.This is one of the rare joys of the film.The first hour, gigantic introduction, is catchy.The rest, which comes down to a long action scene, is generally dull and repetitive.
The biggest defect in suicide squad is its brilliant promotional campaign.The energy and madness of the latest trailers are not found on the screen.With these characters, David Ayer had gold in his hands.The mechanical sequence of pop songs - as in the guards of the galaxy - tries to breathe a semblance of cool attitude and rhythm into the feature film.But arrived at half of the playlist, it is clear that the process is completely artificial (let Steven Price express itself, its score captures the ear!).To make sure, the assembly is chaotic, with a multitude of flashbacks and duplicate scenes, which breaks the fluidity of the story.
Who is too embraced, badly embraced ... perhaps, to date, the proverb which best sums up the cinematographic universe DC Comics.Suicide Squad aligns a Task Force X composed of eight characters.We spend eleven by counting Amanda Waller, the Joker and the Enchantress.It's too much.Impossible to develop all these little people in the space of two hours;Because unlike a Captain America: Civil War, we are dealing with unpublished "heroes".We understand the director's desire to present to the public Slipknot, Katana, Killer Croc ... But in the end, what is the interest if they are only doing figuration?This would be explained if [a good part of the group was sacrificed], but it is not even the case.On the other hand, we will appreciate the radicality of the proposed cast: a real hitman, a real thief, a real cannibal, etc ... with suicide squad, on this point, no half-measures.
It’s now time for the troop review.Let's start with the head.Viola Davis is perfect in Amanda Waller.She had to be the most threatening woman in the film.She is !The director of the A.R.G.U.S.deserves a greater place in the cinematographic universe of DC Comics.Under his orders, Rick Flag.Joel Kinnaman is one of the good surprises of suicide squad.He embodies the only "normal" character of the blockbuster, the only one that we can really identify with.Flag just has his courage and a weapon to survive this crazy world.Far from being erased, this soldier gets away with honors except at the end.
Deadshot… hard not to see Will Smith behind this Floyd Lawton, especially when he inherits the most cliché scenes in the film.Fortunately, the best trigger of the distinguished competition is sufficiently developed to attract the sympathy of the public.At his side, the unrealrable Captain Boomerang.Jai Courtney is considered by many to be bland and slightly unfriendly.So he is ... the ideal person to wear the coat of George ‘Digger’ Harkness!Very good choice.Too bad its capacities are so little exploited.Finally, El Diablo is the second best developed knife in the feature film.Especially because it has a real poetic moment.
Let's open the Harley Quinn file.The most difficult character to manage.In balance, always on the tightrope.Each of its aftershocks, there is the risk that suicide squad swinging in the ridicule.It is - most of the time - not the case, thanks to the mastery of Margot Robbie.But on this point, we must admit that it is extremely subjective (and dependent on your vision of the film, in VF or in VO?).What risks being debated is above all the relationship it has with the Joker.One of the aspects of this relationship - the most essential, the most controversial - was purely and simply cut off.To follow in the inevitable spin-off which will be devoted to it?
Let's go to the Joker, a useful character in the past, useless in the present.The shadow of Heath Ledger hovers on Jared Leto.Necessarily.But the comparison does not have to be.There is not one, but at least three joker.The clown (Jack Nicholson).The gangster (Heath Ledger).The psychopath (Jared Leto).The character embodied by the singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars is creepy at will, that is all that is asked.Its composition is intense and it is felt (it would just have to calm the grunts!).In the end, the biggest problem is his presence time on the screen.The Warner occurred the role of Mister J, when it appears only about ten minutes.Worse, some of his scenes have been cut.So there is only to wait ... a Joker Cut?
A word of advice, if you have the choice, do not see Suicide Squad in 3D.The super-team operates at night.However, as everyone knows, 3D glasses darken the image, spoiling the readability of what's going on on the screen.In this regard, the action scenes are far from memorable.No originality, no moment of bravery worthy of the name.The fault, in part, to interchangeable enemies, against a background of Portal-a-a-Rayon-Bleu-Qui-Déchire-le-Ciel.One again.The House of Ideas did not do better with its chitauris and its ultron-bottles ... But at least, the third act had the politeness of not encroaching on the second.
Quelques remarques, pêle-mêle : les scènes coupées sont nombreuses, ce qui ne manquera pas de relancer le débat sur le premier montage du film, avant les reshoots ; le caméo de vous-savez-qui fera sourire les fans, [mais restera incompréhensible aux yeux du grand public, car trop furtif] ; le générique de fin, avec ‘Heathens’ du groupe twenty one pilots, est réussi ; et la scène post-générique, bien que prévisible, renforce la cohérence du DCEU naissant. Une petite question sur la mission de laJustice League Dark, Suicide Squad : leur objectif était de [récupérer le ‘colis’ ; mais du coup, qu’avait prévu le gouvernement pour contrer la menace] ? Rien ? Attendre novembre prochain, le temps que Bruce Wayne forme la Justice League ?
