Supported by more than a dozen dedicated volunteers, the Matane Cross-Country Ski Club is attracting more outdoor enthusiasts despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
President for a fourth year after having already been in the past, Paul Gauthier is very happy with this increase in attendance. Like others, he does not count his hours to ensure the maintenance of the trails and the reception at L'Igloo, at the end of rue du Golf.
More than 300 members
“We have more than 300 members and there are more and more skiers or snowshoers who choose to pay their right of access for the day since December 26, he points out. Like last year, many people opting for the southern sun took out their skis or snowshoes. »
In anticipation of this new season, the Club has invested more than $10,000 in the drainage and maintenance of its tracks. Two firms saw it: Mini Excavation and Les Services René Harrison. Volunteers also put in theirs.
In good financial condition
The Club is in good financial health. “We conscientiously invest the money that we get mainly from the sale of our membership cards and access rights. This year, we raised our fees by just a few dollars to retain our members. This allows us to maintain our equipment. »
Open every day, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, L'Igloo can only accommodate two people at a time in compliance with the standards in force, at the instead of the usual 15 and 20.
Gina Bernier and Jean Gagnon provide this service from Tuesday to Sunday, while President Paul Gauthier and the administrator responsible for trails and equipment, Antoine Pelletier, are there on Mondays. For his part, Donald Bouffard sees to the tracing of the trails.
