Looking for environmentally friendly solutions to maintain and protect your wooden furniture? Be aware that there are natural and effective solutions to take care of all types of furniture. Whether they are made of raw wood, waxed wood, or varnished wood, we give you some tips to give shine or shine your furniture.
Clean and shine your varnished wooden furniture
The layer of varnish that protects some of your wooden furniture is sensitive to scratches and overly aggressive cleaning products. To protect these varnished furniture, choose environmentally friendly products that respect wood and the environment.
Before glossing wood, be it varnished, raw or waxed, make sure to dust it with a reusable microfibre cloth.
To nourish and shine a varnished wood cabinet, you can use a mixture of white vinegar and olive oil. Mix them equally in a small container. The quantity depends on the surface area of wood to be treated. For a medium-sized piece of furniture, one tablespoon of white vinegar and one tablespoon of olive oil will suffice.
Apply the mixture to a microfibre cloth and gently rub the wood, then dry to gloss and shine the wood.
You can also use a mixture of almond oil and water. Mix 10 ml of cold water and 10 ml of almond oil, and soak a cotton fabric with this preparation. Gently rub the furniture and dry.
Another less well known natural ingredient for the care of varnished wood is tea. The tannic acid it contains allows furniture to be cleaned and glossed without damaging the varnish layer. Infuse three sachets of black tea into a liter of boiling water. Let the water cool without removing the sachets. Soak a soft cloth of infused tea and gently apply to the wood, then dry.
Cold coffee also allows you to detach and shine your varnished wooden furniture. Just pour some on a soft cloth and gently apply it to the furniture.
Give shine to your waxed wood furniture
Waxed wood is less brittle than varnished wood and easier to maintain. You still have to take some precautions, never start using fuzzy fabric that could leave fibres in wax. Choose reusable microfibre cotton wipes.
Cleaning chemicals make your waxed wood furniture shine temporarily, but they eventually foul it. The wax becomes sticky and attracts dust particles.
Carnauba wax milk is a 100% natural product that nourishes and shines waxed wood without soiling it. Apply a thin layer with a microfibre cloth, let dry and gloss with another clean, dry microfibre cloth. Carnauba wax is produced by a Brazilian palm, Copernicia prunifera, to protect its leaves from the sun.
Your waxed wood furniture can also be fouled, such as nicotine if a person smokes regularly in the home. In this case, you can give the furniture shine with turpentine gasoline. It is an essential oil obtained from an oleoresin. Be sure to use an oil without additives.
Protect your raw wood furniture with linseed oil
If your furniture is made of raw wood, you can wax it with linseed oil. Extracted from the seeds of the plant, it nourishes and brightens the wood. It protects it from UV, which tends to make it dull, but also from insects and fungi. Be careful, however: it gives a slightly darker colour to light wood and is not suitable for teak.
For a lasting result, it is advisable to pass several layers of linseed oil, waiting between 12: 00 and 24: 00 between each pass. Using a brush, apply linseed oil in the direction of the wood and do not interrupt so as not to leave any traces. After each layer, gently rub the surface of your furniture with a very thin sandpaper.
Once your furniture is protected, the maintenance is very simple: a microfibre rag and a little bit of Marseillesoap or black soap will suffice.
