Wednesday, February 16, 2022, the High Authority for Health (HAS) issued new recommendations concerning button batteries. These small objects present, especially in toys, watches or remote controls."They present a potentially fatal risk because of their toxicity for the organization of very young children," explains the authority, which lists in its report the good reactions to adopt in the event of ingestion on the part of a child.
A publication which then intervenes "that there is an increase in France of cases of ingestion of big diameter batteries", underlines the HAS.But to date, "no French recommendation defines in detail the overall management of children who have ingested a button battery: health professionals alone appreciate the situation of each child, which can induce heterogeneity of practices on the ground".A situation she intends to respond, by publishing this document.
The first recommendation that HAS emits repudiate the idea that it will be necessary to have the child swallowed immediately with the child.
"In case of ingestion of a button or doubt, it is recommended to leave on an empty stomach and not to make it vomit," she writes. It is however necessary to immediately contact the 15th or an anti -poison center.
HAS highlights the importance of reactivity, risks increasing over time.A swallowed battery can enclaver the esophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach.Such a situation can then lead to "a chemical burn of the mucosa whose gravity increases beyond 2 hours".
The HAS then adds that a risk of ancestor increases if the child is 5 years old or less, and that the battery has a diameter "greater than or equal to 15 mm".
In order to find out where the battery has remained blocked, the HAS recommends to health professionals the realization of a chest x -ray, described as a "real emergency".Then to carry out a "high digestive endoscopy" which must intervene "without delay to limit the occurrence of a serious esophageal burn", in order to release the digestive tract.
To the public authorities, the HAS and the Clinical Toxicology Society (STC) in particular suggest regular information in the long term on the risks of ingestion of a button targeting the general public, professionals of early childhood and health.
They also recommend them to "work with industrialists responsible for placing the button batteries, including at European level, to promote the manufacture and use of button batteries with a diameter less than 15 mm, but also forSecure the devices operating with these batteries, ”said the press release.
